Wow Jay! At a future meet-up, I'm going to have to beg you to show me your extensive plug-in collection. I like that you turned on some type of avatar in the comments a while back (maybe you posted about it, but I missed it). And you probably noticed I totally stole using the anti-spam math plug-in on my blog, in place of isHuman(). Looks like I have more cool stuff I need to strongly consider thievering.

When I left the comment I wasn't sure if that was the editing thing, or CommentLuv. I'm going to use the edit feature (hopefully) to clean it up...if that doesn't work, feel free to edit it yourself.

Way too cool. Again, you're implementing something that's been on my mind for quite a while. I opted for the Hotlist to let people link back to themselves because I'd be a bit worried about junk comments (i.e. AR style "great post" comments) if I threw it on Rain City Guide. Anyway, I'm so glad to see you take this on and I'll be really curious to see how it turns out! ;)

Glad to see the KeywordLuv plugin installed. I have seen it on a few sites and thought the aspect of grabbing the last post on the person's blog was pretty sweet. I think that aspect alone encourages (or at least it should) constructive comments. If you make good comments then people will want to view your posts :)

Nice adds Jay!

Now onto the most annoying part of being a "giving" blogger - watching out for those trying to game the system. Whether it be my A.D.D., or my generally good nature, I always try to make any reply something that contributes to the post rather than something that just "attaches" to it.

However, it's always unfortunate when you scroll through some posts (not here specifically, but on other blogs that either do follow or simply don't use Akismet or any filtering) and see a bunch of one liner replies or replies that are posted by someone with a very auspicious username and a seemingly unrelated or badly worded comment.

Hopefully you don't mind a little extra work that comes with such an open-use comment policy.

For those of us that love to reply with our own deep thoughts, it's always nice to not feel pressured to think "Ok, do I leave a long reply on this person's blog, or do I save some of these thoughts, keep it short, and just write a blog post instead". I may spend more of my energy commenting on friends' blogs than writing my own, but it's only because I try not to half-ass on either side.

With an open policy like this, we at least get a little bonus point or two for the times when we can't comment and write on our own end. You don't allow ourselves to feel punished for contributing, in other words.

I think what you are doing here with comments is a great idea. More blogs should incorporate these plugins and techniques. Not only does this help commenters in SEO but it helps the blog owner in social proof and credibility.

Kim, had the same problem. I'm using Wordpress which is pretty much the standard for that sort of plugin, so I'm assuming it could be an issue on the server taking too long to reach during the "find the latest post" process or something similar. I wouldn't worry about it unless it still happens after a couple days.

It may well be a timing issue that is keeping some comments form displaying the commenter's most recent post. I *think* I can bump up the time out, but I'm not sure. In fact, I'm not sure about much of how this all works. I'm a real estate broker, not a programmer! ;)

Max - the comment edit and the recent post are two separate plugins. Looks like you've discovered an issue with them not playing 100% well with each other.

Gotta love auto-fill....typed my website wrong the first time I commented (noticed and fixed it right away) yet it auto-filled from the first comment when I made the second comment and I didn't catch it! (Can I edit it now, or it's too late?)

It turns out that I had to disable my Feedburner plugin before it could find mine. It may have been causing a timeout or simply obfuscating the feed location enough to make it impossible to find.

Also, lowering the amount of posts your feed shows can help too. 5-7 is a good number from what I've found. Hope it helps!

Linsey (and others) - the little corner flip thingy is a little painful to install. There is a plugin that I never got to work. So I configured the javascript files it contains myself (they are pretty well documented), created the "look here" image and the image that shows when the corner is flipped, and uploaded the images and javascript files to the blogs server. I had to doink around with where the script file are saved, and where in the blog theme header to put the calls to the javascript. The plugin/files are here.

Edge - thanks for providing that link! Even if that test says it's OK, there can still be reasons CommentLuv can't find someone's last post. Apparently it only tries for about 3 seconds and if it can't find it, it bails out (makes sense, otherwise it could hang forever). Several connections and things have to be done in that three seconds. If any one thing fails, then no last post will be displayed

It's also imperative of course to understand that the URL must be typed correctly and it will only pick up blog posts, not static web pages.

Plugins like these are really a great way to get people to read your blog posts. This works best if you wish to market your ideas to a wide audience. For Phoenix real estate, I'm not sure that the benefits outweight the negatives.

I installed the Keyword Luv plug-in on our real estate blog in San Diego and it really has been interesting to see and track some of the comments. I think that you have to be careful with spam but you also get a lot more participation in your blog and it gets other people involved who might not have participated in the past. I think the plug-in has been a big success.

I think that those of you that use the keyword luv plugin should commended for your desire to offer a place for relevant comments to be posted while at the same time getting great content posted to your blog. If more bloggers would realize the potential power of such an application, many more bloggers would welcome commenting that would allow the participant to make an on topic post that would in turn increase the publishers content and at the same time allowing the commentor to receive a link back to their own blog with an anchor.

Taking part in the dofollow revolution is really commendable. For me it allows me to take part in conversations and also feel that I'm not just twitterring away my time cause I'm getting a little SEO boost by commenting. It makes it worthwhile to join in on the conversation. So good.

I've never seen the twitter ID field though. Where'd you get that?

I think you'll find that using the comment Luv plugin will greatly increase the comments that you get to your site, if you can whittle out the blatantly spammy ones that offer no value however, you are left with some pretty decent feedback. I've used it on one of my blogs to great effect.

I think this plug in is great! While I'm sure it can be annoying with some posting just spam comments, it does intice your readers to leave more comments. It's a win win situation for both sides. The commenter gets a little link love and the blog owner gets a more active blog.

These plugins definitely get more readers and commentators involved. They also build relationships within the blogger community, too. But, I hope it's not just about improving your rankings with backlinks: we all have a stake in furthering meaningful discourse in the blogsphere with strong grammar, proper punctuation and compelling content. As Thomas Paine once wrote, "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly."

The page rank formula still plays a role. Assuming you don't want to use a page to pass PR to your own pages for internal linking and the phrases you want to rank for, this is a great plugin to reward readers and give them an incentive to ge participate.

So far, the only solution to drove away those spammers is to select and moderate all the comments from a blog. But again, just to avoid exclusion of your comments just give relevant comments to the topic. Spread the Luv.

Keyword Luv and Comment Luv are very helpful and useful plugins. I think that all bloggers should give them a try.

Well, i think you guys said it all... This plugin is one of the coolest around :) Its great but i think a minimum of control is needed to prevent spammers getting in. Thanks for sharing.

Some people are afraid that there will be more comment spams after putting up "you comment I follow" or "comment/keyword-luv". They're afraid of having a spate of a few hundred of those 3-worded comments like "good post" or "keep up the good work" kinda thing. What i find on my personal blog, really is that i indeed have a little more of such comments, but it really encouraged more quality comments to emerge. It's a little pain for a huge gain -- to be able to know what our readers think and feel about what we write. Most readers do not leave comments, and if we want to encourage readers who are also webmasters to leave comments, this may be the best thing we can do.
